December Newsletter

Welcome to December’s Newsletter… I can’t believe it is nearly Christmas, and another year has nearly past.  So Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

Dates for your Diary


Tuesday’s during Term Time:

Before school yoga club at Wilberlee Primary School (closed group) – Last session of this term is Tuesday 6th December.

Wednesday’s during Term Time:

YogaTots preschool class suitable for children from about 18mth/2 years old.  The class includes yoga postures and movements to music, games and an introduction to mindful breathing and relaxation.  The class runs from 9:45 til 10:45, at Active Bodies in Milnsbridge, and costs just £4 per child (£2 for additional children in the group) and includes a snack and drink for the children afterwards.  And if you are planning to come regularly you can get your 6th class free with our loyalty card.

Last session of this term is Wednesday 14th December.

Saturday 3rd December & 17th December:

Kids yoga at Colne Valley Garden Centre 1:30-3:30pm, as part of the weekly DanzStarz class. This is a free class suitable for children aged approx 3+, and you can drop in and stay as long as you want.  The class will include yoga postures and movements to music, games, a story, craft activity, plus an introduction to breathing and relaxation.

The session on 17th December will have some Christmas themed songs, story and craft.

Sunday 4th December:

Kids yoga class for HDSSG (closed group)

Sunday 18th December: 

Mindfulness workshop for HNP (closed group).

Coming up in the New Year:

In the new year I am planning some family mindfulness sessions, that will be aimed at school aged children and their parents/carers.  I have lots of fun ideas for introducing mindfulness to kids, and the plan will be for the workshops to run alternate months.

Some interesting recent stories from the world of yoga and mindfulness…

This news article from the BBC, talks about a new initiative in Northern Ireland to help teach primary school kids how to deal with stress.  It’s great that the need has been identified and is being addressed, but I can’t help feel sad that the need is there in the first place.

I didn’t even know that UNESCO had a list of ‘intangible cultural treasures’ until I ready this article.  But is does, and Yoga is now on it! 

And there is research suggesting that breath-based yoga practice may improve symptoms of depression.

Practical Tip:  Slow down and appreciate the festive period


At this time of year we are bombarded with idyllic images of happy, perfect families enjoying the festive period.  I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s reality is far from this!  This article from Mindful Magazine offers a few practical tips for slowing down and appreciating the festive period.
